The Rabbi’s Manual

As much as one can be trained, at the end of the day, most rabbinic work is learned on the job. That is why The Rabbi’s Manual was created. A blog on how to become a better rabbi, teacher, and leader.

My name is Jeremy Markiz, and I am a newly minted rabbi and it is my goal to help you (and me) become the best we can be.

I hope that you will learn something new and become more impactful than you thought possible, in person, online, and everywhere you choose to be.

About Me

After being ordained in 2016 from the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, I moved to a new city and started my rabbinic career with no job and no idea what I was going to do.

Over the course of my first year, I worked on a ton of projects with JCCs to Day Schools and with the fantastic Congregation Beth Shalom, building my portfolio and opportunities.

I became fascinated by new media, including podcasts and social networks, realizing how incredible these tools could be.

That year, I launched a website, a podcast and….. another podcast.

All of this taught me so much!

In the summer of 2017, through partnership, trust, and a little luck, I was hired full time to launch Beth Shalom’s innovative Derekh program. In its first year alone, we held around 100 events, and had more than 1,700 in-person encounters.

Not bad for a year’s work.

When we entered 2020, this program grew to over 250 events and over 2500 encounters this year.

I love to build things, my community, my skills, and grow with the people around me.

I don’t wait around, I try new things, and I look for collaboration.

I’m working on a great deal more, to improve myself and my community. In 2018, I have been grateful to be a Rabbis Without Borders fellow. In 2019, I had the chance to present at two rabbinic conferences about social media and community growth strategy.

How did The Rabbi’s Manual happen?

Over the last few years of my rabbinate, I realized how much I have learned on the job and how valuable those lessons were. I wanted to find a way to share what I have learned and help other rabbis do the same.

That is why this blog exists.

Please sign up for my email. Use what I’ve learned to shortcut your learning process.

I appreciate every, single, moment of your valuable time.

Jeremy
